Today, a successful FD should have the capacity to act as the CEO’s right-hand man and possess the self-confidence and emotional strength to encourage caution or boldness in their leader. It's no accident at all that so many current CEOs of major corporations developed through the finance channel and are professionally qualified.

Ideally, an FD must have a strong EQ, calling upon their ability to sway the views of others to help them push a business strategy forward. With the development of EQ, an FD can create more meaningful relationships with the people they work with day-to-day. These strong relationships help an FD expand their influence on the people around them, not just within finance but spanning various departments and hierarchies. Negotiating skills are also a key factor in any FD’s success in influencing their colleagues; these diplomatic skills are vital for managing different colleagues’ concerns and priorities whilst driving growth.

In addition, high emotional intelligence drives stronger communication skills. Such skills ensure financial insight is more effectively communicated to colleagues, again enabling an FD to wield greater influence in the making of important decisions. Articulate written and verbal communication skills, and the clear and impactful messages that they convey, give colleagues and stakeholders confidence in an FD’s counsel."
